Many questions come up around the whale of Jonah’s Story. How big are these whales? How do they live and what do they eat? Why didn’t Jonah die when he was in the belly of the whale for three days? I will try to answer these questions in this article.

The following question came to me from some of the congregants:

When the Lord appeared to Moses in the burning bush and sent him to Pharaoh to deliver the people of Israel from the land of servitude, He said to him “I have surely seen the oppression of My people and have heard their cry. So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey.” (Exodus 3:7-8). The land of Canaan is geographically small, not as large as the land of Egypt. It is only 30 miles wide, limited by the Dead Sea and the Jordan River from the East and the Mediterranean Sea from the West. Therefore, it is clear that God means something other than the large land because the people of Israel were choked and oppressed in the land of Egypt despite its large size.

When we hear about the birth of a king or an heir of a king it occurs to us how much attention this heir will get from people and how much honor and glory will envelop this important event. However the events of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, the King of kings, are rather mystifying!

The Lord Jesus pointed out to the Samaritan woman in His conversation with her that the gift of God surpasses the materialistic matters that she aspired to. He encouraged her to seek this gift and promised to give her abundantly (John 4).

In the previous article, we explained that our saintly Fathers recognized the importance of carrying the cross in their lives and accepting suffering in patience. They recognized how the cross is important to their spiritual growth and in protecting them from the serious disease of pride. Therefore, they endured suffering with thanksgiving and used it for their edification.
