The Divinity of Christ (5)

First: Christ has all the Divine characteristics [God’s epithets]

  1. He has the absolute authority:
  1. Over nature.

"And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” (Mark 4:41).

"When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink" (Luke 5:4-7).

"And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it, “Let no fruit grow on you ever again.” Immediately the fig tree withered away" (Matt. 21:19).

This confirms that Christ has authority over all creation as He is the creator.

  1. Over Angels.

"who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him" (1 Peter 3:22).

"The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness" (Matt. 13:41).

It is evident that Christ is the Lord of the angels, and not just a high rank angel as Jehovah Witnesses claim. He has the full authority over heavenly hosts.

  1. Over the devils.

"But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him" (Mark 1:25).

"Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." (Luke 10:17).

It is clear that Christ has great authority over devils. Moreover, He is even able to grant this authority to His children who believe in His name.

  1. Over the Law.

"And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching," (Matt. 7:28).

Christ taught with authority for He is the source of the Law. When He speaks, He doesn't relay a message that is not His; He rather expresses a teaching of His own. This is why it comes with power and authority.

"You have heard that... But I say to you that...." (Matt. 5:22).

Based on this verse,  it is clear that Christ is God who gave the Law in Old Testament. Now, in the New Testament, He presents the highest level of the Law. For example, we understand that no one  can issue a second edition of a book with additions except the author who wrote that book himself.  Similarly, we realized that Christ is the Law Maker. This is why He is the only one who was able to explain it for us and promote our level in the New Testament so that we may carry out the commandments spiritually – not literally.

"For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath" (Matt. 12:8).

That is, Christ was the author of the Sabbath commandment of the Ten Commandments. Consequently, He has authority over the commandment regarding explaining its meaning, essence, and how to implement it.
