A Loss in Memory

The situation was so shocking and extremely horrible. When they both were exposed to this horrible accident, they lost their memory and their condition was deplorable.

Unfortunately, there was no specialized hospital nor were physicians to help in that situation.

However, God, through His loving care for everyone, was so kind to them and interfered at the right time. He healed them and restored their memory for them. After they were lost wandering astray in darkness, their eyes reopened and they went back to the right track.

This is not an unknown story for us. It is the story of the two disciples of Emmaus who had a memory loss after the horrible shock of the Cross. Despite being Disciples of Christ for three years, His teachings and astounding miracles were temporarily erased from their memory. The disciples felt sad, defeated, and confused.

However, Jesus Christ did not leave them in this miserable condition, but He went and accompanied them in their journey. He had a long conversation with them, explaining to them the prophecies about Him in the books of the Old Testament. Their heart was burnt within them and their eyes were opened after they ate the broken bread.

This is what happens with us when we get a shock or go through a hardship. Sometimes, our faith weakens and we forget God’s might and His great actions with us throughout our life. Consequently, our hope for salvation becomes shaky. However, the Lord Jesus Christ is kind to us and visits us with His living words, restoring our hope, joy, and peace. He reminds us that His words in the Holy Scriptures are our light, medicine, and steadfastness at the times of pain and suffering.

Now, I leave you my dear reader with Saint Augustine to continue the article with his amazing contemplations:

+ Jesus appeared to them. He was visible for their eyes. However, they could not know Him. The Master walked with them in the way. However, indeed, He was the Way that they had not yet taken. He found that they lost the way, His death was like a loss of memory for them. They were so troubled when they saw Him hanged on the Cross to the extent that they forgot His teachings; they did not wait for His resurrection and failed to keep His promises in their minds

+ "But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel" (Luke24:21). O Disciples... You were hoping, which means that you no longer hope?! Look! Christ is alive, but hope is dead inside you. Truly Christ is alive. However, the Living Christ found the hearts of His disciples dead!

+ "They constrained Him, saying, Abide with us." Constrain the Lord if you desire to know the Savior. The generous hospitality made up for what they lost due to the lack of faith.

+ "He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight." They knew the Lord Jesus, and after they knew Him, He vanished. He withdrew His physical presence away from those who has taken Him now by faith. Indeed, The Lord withdrew His physical presence away from the whole church and ascended to Heaven to build faith. If you accept only what you see, where is your faith then? On the other hand, if you believe in what you do not see, you will be happy when you see.

Blessed are those who have not seen but believed as they will be glad when they see.
