A Quiet Discussion on Abortion (3)

From our previous article, it is clear that abortion is killing of a living human being, even if they are not born yet. Now, what is the opinion of the Bible in abortion?

The Holy Bible and Abortion

* The Holy Bible does not allow killing, for it is a great sin that deserve death as punishment:

Here are some verses:

+ “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God He made man” (Gen. 9:6).

+ “You shall not murder” (Ex. 20:13).

+ “Whoever kills any man shall surely be put to death” (Lev. 24:17,21).

+ “Whoever kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the testimony of witnesses” (Num. 35:30).

+ “For all who take the sword will perish by the sword” (Mt. 26:52).

+ “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him” (1 Jn. 3:15).

* The Holy Bible does not allow abortion:

As it is written in Exodus (Ex. 21:22-25), if a pregnant woman is injured during a fight, so that she gives birth prematurely and the baby is harmed, then whoever caused the injury shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth,  wound for wound. This means that the fetus was considered by the Mosiac Law to be identical to adults.

Even if the abortion happened unintentionally, there was still a punishment.  How much more punishment will there be for those who intentionally perform  abortions?

* The Divine Punishment:

“No murderer has eternal life abiding in him”

(1 Jn. 3:15).

Abortion may be performed by the pregnant woman alone, and sometimes may be performed by medical means and the doctor bears some of the responsibility and is considered a partner in the killing (Pope Shenouda). It may be also through the approval of the husband and in this case the husband is a partner in the responsibility of killing. The responsibility of abortion may be also through the encouragement of others. In all cases God may reveal His anger against those who commit abortion warning them of His punishment.

Some people have talked to me about the punishment of God that they have received after abortion, among whom doctors who performed it, and this was a Divine revelation of God’s disapproval about these deeds, and they offered repentance and vowed not to perform it again. Some have paid a high price for this crime, and some have lost their life. This is not strange for the justice of God that must be fulfilled: “For with the judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you” (Mt.7: 2). After King David sinned, his own dear children committed acts of adultery and murder. Thus, he harvested fruits similar to his evil acts that he had done.
