There is one who seeks and judges

This beautiful verse is one of words of the Lord Jesus according to the Gospel of John. He used it in His conversation with the Jews when they insulted him by saying “Do we not say rightly that you are a Samaritan and have a demon? Jesus answered, ‘I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges.’ ” (John 8: 48-50)

We are subjected to various forms of insults in our lives.  Humiliation undoubtedly hurts the innards of the human soul, so accepting it is one of the most difficult things in life.

But the Lord Jesus faced humiliation and insult calmly and rationally and did not respond to evil with evil. Even though He knew what was said in His face and behind His back, He did not take revenge, but rather said: “There is one who seeks and judges.”

+ The Lord Jesus gives us an important lesson not to take revenge for ourselves, but leave it to God who will justly condemn people, for all their affairs, hidden and manifest are revealed to Him. Therefore the bible commands stating: “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves… For it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.” (Romans 12:19)

+ This verse encourages us to adhere to meekness and not to respond to the offensive and rough manners with the same, for there is one who seeks and judges.

+ This passage also speaks to us about abstaining from judging others because this is never our responsibility. Additionally, we do not know their circumstances or their innards, but rather there is one who seeks and judges, and His judgment is just because He knows everything.  Therefore, the Bible commands us: “Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God.”  (1 Cor. 4: 5).

+ Serving justice greatly comforts the heart of man.  Here, the Lord Jesus assures us that justice will be served because there is one who seeks and judges. However, not all justice will be served here on earth, but it will be fulfilled in heaven. This can be seen in the parable of the rich and Lazarus, when our father Abraham said to the rich as he was being tormented in hell: “Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.” (Luke 16:25)

+ If there is one who seeks and judges, then man must always place the fear of the Lord in his heart, and be cautious in his words and actions whether hidden or apparent. For every idle word, destructive act, or improper action we do, we will give an account for it.

+ God is very patient and gives us plenty of opportunities to repent, but we must understand that no matter how many opportunities we might have, they are limited. And if we waste these opportunity, we will regret at the time when regret does not benefit us, for there is one who seeks and judges.

+ God asks us to say a word of truth, a word of encouragement, a word of edification, a word to make peace. However, if we don’t use such words, we will be judged, because there is one who seeks and judges.

+ It is better that we condemn ourselves, before we are judged before God. However, if we justify ourselves, try to find excuses for our mistakes, don’t try to be contrite and correct our mistakes, then there is one who seeks and judges.

Finally, as much as this verse gives comfort to the oppressed and tormented souls in this world, as much as it emphasizes that the judgment is inevitably coming upon all the ungodly, the wicked, the reckless, and those who oppose the truth.  But those who live a life of repentance every day, always wash their robes and made them white in the blood of Christ through the holy sacraments, conduct their lives according to the spirit and not according to the flesh, tolerate the weak and bear the malice of the wicked, treat others with love and gentleness, those will not condemned by God but He will justify them. They will be worthy to enjoy the heavenly banquet and eternal glory.
