Living according to the Spirit

As we celebrate the Pentecost today, I thought of writing this week’s article using the scriptures to talk about the gift of the Holy Spirit and living according to the spirit.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ …That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life, for God does not give the Spirit by measure because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.  To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace for if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Do not quench the Spirit, I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. He who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.  The kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
