Simple Sins

One of the most dangerous ploys Satan utilizes is to have us not hold God's commandments highly.

He makes us believe that it's a non-issue. And even if we're going to commit sin, we're going to benefit greatly from it. The truth is, whoever doesn't follow the commandments will never win anything, in fact he will lose everything.

Lot’s wife is an example of a person who lost everything because she didn't follow the clear commandment; “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.” (Genesis 19:17) and the previous verse says, “And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.” (Genesis 19:16)

And this shows us that God—out of His kind heartedness—deals with us and has certain commandments for us to save us. Therefore, the commandment is always in our favor.

The commandments are signs of love initiated by God to every human being, giving us invaluable advice for our happiness, freedom and salvation. The person that is arrogant and refuses the commandment, or isn’t diligent in following it, then he himself is giving out his own death sentence. The commandment is eternal life to whoever follows it and eternal judgment to whoever disobeys it.

Commandments appear often to be simple on the outside, but that doesn’t mean that we take it lightly.

Let’s take a few examples:

“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat.” (Genesis 2:17)

“Do not look behind you.” (Genesis 19:17)

“Do not bear false witness.” (Mark 10:19)

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house … nor anything that is your neighbor’s.” (Exodus 20:17)

“Do not swear.” (Matthew 5:34)

“Judge not.” (Matthew 7:1)

“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth.” (Ephesians 4:29)

"Keep yourself pure." (1Tim 5:22)

"Be faithful." (Rev 2:10)

As much as the commandment seems simple, the blatant disregard of it is deadly. It could cause irreparable damage.

God’s commandments, especially the cautionary ones, are clear and specific. They are easy to follow. It is imperative to take them seriously and not be like Lot’s wife. Lot’s wife was starting her way to safety, but she lost everything due to her carelessness toward the commandment that seemed very simple.

Christ warns us to, “Remember Lot’s wife” (Luke 17). Meaning, remember how she perished because of what she considered a simple mistake.

All commandments are important. There isn’t a single commandment that we can ignore because it’s small and not essential. St. James says by the Holy Spirit, “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all” (James 2:10).
